Former Chelsea defender David Luiz reveals he nearly joined Barcelona

Barcelona will tonight take on Paris Saint German at the Parc des Princes for a UEFA Champions League Group F clash, and David Luiz - who joined PSG from Chelsea for a reported fee of £50million in the close-season - claims he might have been part of the Spanish giants' travelling party.

Speaking to AS ahead of Tuesday's game, the Brazil star said: "It's true they (Barca) tried to tempt me a couple of times and everything looked good.
"But eventually I realised the team that really wanted me was PSG."

PSG seem to be having it tough in the new season, with four 1-1 draws in their last five games increasing the pressure on coach Laurent Blanc.

However, David Luiz is in no doubt that the French champions will get back to top form sooner rather than later.

"We're progressing every week and need to find a better version for our style of play - something similar to Barca," he added.

"We know there is much room for improvement and are aware that is how the big teams think.

"Over the years I've learned that if you think you've reached the top of the ladder then you are heading for a fall. That's not a good mentality to have.

"You must be ambitious, with humility, because you can always improve.

"We are on the right road and PSG will get back to what they were last season."

''I think Remy is learning how to play with us. His pace is good, his movement is good, he can get behind defenders, he's not bad in the air. He has some similarities with Diego and if he has to play, no problem. But I prefer to play Diego.

The England forward told reporters that he has apologised to his team mates and appreciated their efforts by ensuring they held on to the lead despite the West Ham onslaught.

"It was probably the right decision," declared Rooney, who also confirmed he will not be appealing the dismissal. "I saw the West Ham player making a counter-attack and I tried to break up the play, but I just misjudged it.

"I didn't absolutely volley the lad. I tried to trip him up and, to be fair to him, he got further away from me and that's why my leg is straighter than it should have been. As he pushed the ball away, my leg straightened out and that is obviously why the referee deemed it as a red card."
On his apologies to the team, he said - "Of course I did. I think everyone knew [I was in the wrong]. It’s always tough against 11 men when you are a man down, especially when they are throwing a lot of balls into the box as West Ham were doing, so I am grateful that we held out."

''Knowing the media, it was good for him to score early! He scored a similar goal to the one in Switzerland [for England] and the timing of his runs and ball retention was very good,” he said.
