AC Milan have abandoned talks with Manchester City over the transfer of Carlos Tevez, BBC Sport understands.
It is thought the negotiations for the forward ended after the decision of Milan's Alexandre Pato to stay in Italy and not move to Paris Saint-Germain.
However, City hope a deal with Milan can be concluded for Tevez, 27, before the end of the January transfer window.
The development could reignite Inter Milan's interest in the former Manchester United man.
Milan chief executive Adriano Galliani had been holding talks with City and Tevez's agent Kia Joorabchian in London, before Pato's proposed £29m move to PSG broke down.
City are holding out for a permanent deal for Tevez, and are not willing to let the striker leave on loan.

Maxwell completes PSG switch
Paris St Germain have confirmed the signing of Maxwell from Barcelona for an undisclosed fee, rumoured to be in the region of €3.5 million.
He becomes PSG's first signing of the January transfer window, has agreed a three-and-a-half year deal with the club.
Maxwell, 30, has been on the fringes at Barcelona this campaign, making just twelve appearances for the Catalan giants.
"From my first conversation with (director of football) Leonardo, I felt really wanted,'' Maxwell said. "The invitation to join Paris made me very happy. This suits from the path that I have taken before (playing for Ajax, Inter Milan, and Barcelona). The project and the prospects motivated me.''
Since his 2009 move from Inter Milan, the full-back may not have established himself in the first-team at the Camp Nou, but has picked up two La Liga titles, two European Supercups, two Club World Cups and a Champions League trophy in his time in Spain.
The player underwent a medical in Paris on Thursday morning, with the French league leaders announcing the capture on their official website in the afternoon.
Formerly of Cruzeiro, Ajax and Inter Milan, Maxwell will offer the French side versatility and experience in the full-back positions.
The signing of cover at left full-back was a priority for PSG this January, as they look to cover for the absence of Siaka Tiene, who is representing Ivory Coast at the African Cup of Nations tournament over the next month.

Steven Gerrard signs a new long-term deal with Liverpool
Liverpool captain Steven Gerrard has signed a new long-term contract with the club which will effectively see him end his career at Anfield.
The 31-year-old England international, who came through the ranks at the club, made his debut back in November 1998.
He has also agreed to take up an ambassadorial role at his hometown club when he finally hangs up his boots.
"I'm very happy. It's a very proud day for myself and my family," said Gerrard, after signing the deal.
Gerrard's new deal comes on top of the thrill of scoring the only goal of the game at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday night as Liverpool beat City in the Carling Cup semi-final first leg.
