Champions League title holder Real Madrid were beaten 4-3 Schalke at the Santiago Bernabeu on Tuesday night but qualified for the next round of the UEFA Champions League on 5-4 aggregate.
With a 2-0 lead from the first leg, Real Madrid were favourites for the ticket to the next phase but the Germans showed character, confidence and took advantage of the flaws at the back-line of the Whites.
The visitors drew the first blood in the 20th first half but Cristiano Ronaldo rose to the occasion to level thing up for the Spanish club and also getting his second later in the game to boost his Champions league goal record to 76 goals in 115 games.
Klaas Jan Huntelaar and 19-year old substitute Leroy Sane were thorns in the flesh of the hosts survived the scare.
