Serena beats Wozniacki in US Open Final, pockets $4million

American female Tennis player, Serena Williams has once again showed why she is one of the greatest players of all time after putting up one of her best performances of the year to defeat Caroline Wozniacki 6-3, 6-3 and win the US Open for a third consecutive year.

With this win Williams captures her 18th Grand Slam singles title, tying Martina Navratilova and Chris Evert. Steffi Graf is the only player in the Open era with more Grand Slam titles at 22.

Williams also becomes the first player to win three consecutive US Open titles since Chris Evert, who swept the tournament from 1975-78. This was also the third year that she won the US Open without losing a set, having previously done so in 2002 and 2008.

According to the tournament official website, the No. 1 seed collected $3 million for winning the US Open this year, plus an additional $1 million bonus for winning the Emirates Airline US Open Series this summer, making her $4 million check the largest winner's purse in US Open history. Wozniacki received $1,450,000 for reaching the final.

Despite the loss, Wozniacki can consider this tournament a bonafide success after reaching her second Grand Slam final and first since the 2009 US Open. She will move back into the Top 10 when the latest rankings are released.
