Manchester United came from 2-0 down to win the final of the
inaugural Barclays Under-21 Premier League, beating Tottenham Hotspur
3-2 at Old Trafford.
Spurs had been the favourites, having won their two groups in
progressing to the final, and looked to be justifying the tag when they
went two up in the first half. Jonathan Obika opened the scoring on 29
minutes with his fifth goal past United this season. Alex Pritchard
knocked down the ball in a challenge with Manchester United goalkeeper
Ben Amos and Obika pounced to sweep in his 18th goal of the competition.
Obika was also involved in Spurs’ second goal, just before half-time, intercepting the ball and passing to Pritchard to score.
United found a way back on 59 minutes when Marnick Vermijl overlapped
down the right and cut inside to shoot into the far corner. Fifteen
minutes later the scores were level. Larnell Cole, whose hat-trick
steered United past Liverpool in the semi-final, rounded Jordan Archer
in the Spurs goal to equalise after a United counter-attack.
Kenneth McEvoy almost grabbed a third for Spurs but, with two minutes
of normal time remaining, Cole scored the winner, beating Archer from
close range.
